02:13 pm - Filtering restaurants by hours of operation

Earlier this afternoon I was trying to make dinner reservations for myself and a couple of friends who are visiting from the exurbs on Monday evening. I was pleased at how easy it was to filter the T-dot's cornucopia of restaurants by type of cuisine, price level, and distance from me. I was even more pleased that I could visually scope out how far places are from the subway line. Frustratingly, however, nearly all the restaurants I'd shortlisted are closed on Monday nights. Why is there no way to filter restaurants by their hours of operation? I'm surprised nobody thought of this whilst designing any of the otherwise excellent websites that purport to make finding a restaurant easy.

09:31 pm - Fashion is insane...

I was at The GAP today afternoon looking for some new pairs of pants. After wading my way through hordes of frenzied shoppers for several minutes, I found a few that I liked and decided to try them on. That's when I discovered that they had buttons instead of zippers for the fly. Whose brilliant idea was that? "Let's take something that's really easy to use and replace it with something else that's nearly impossible to use. It'll be awesome!" Argh!

08:03 am - Moving from design to implementation

Yesterday we ratified the design for the upcoming release of Workstation and were given our assignments for the implementation phase. Unsurprisingly I am implementing the feature that I designed. But I also get to do a couple of other ones, one of which I prototyped. I'm excited :-)

Last night I saw a minivan run a red light while pedestrians were crossing the road. We need more of those red light cameras.

02:02 pm - Aaaurgh! I'm making a citizen's arrest for your cold-blooded murder of the English tongue.

My brain hurts when I try to read badly structured sentences. They make it hard for me to follow the semantics of an argument or explanation because I get tripped up by numerous grammatical flaws. It's like trying to sprint through a crowded mall while people keep grabbing onto your clothing as you run by them. Yes, I know this isn't fair to those who don't speak English natively. I understand how difficult it can be to learn a new language as an adult. But the fact remains that, despite the many inconsistencies that plague it, English is the world's dominant language. [Perhaps this is because it has been allowed to evolve unfettered or because it's the easiest mainstream language to begin learning.] I repeatedly find myself frustrated with people who can't use it effectively. I end up dismissing or ignoring what might be perfectly viable arguments or useful insights because it's cognitively painful to parse their discourse. And I've absolutely no idea what to do about this.
