Apparently I'm a Liberal. Whoda thunk?
My neighbour Eliza came over tonight after work and we cooked a full meal: grilled burgers and summer-squash; corn-bread; freshly-squeezed orange-juice; lemon cookies. When we were done cooking Eliza's housemates (Maisy and Heather) and her boyfriend (Morgan) came over and we all had dinner on my front porch before retiring to the living room for desert. [Apparently Morgan knows Spanish and is thinking of travelling to South America so we might end up being travel buddies.] When we were done eating I went over to their house to watch The Sopranos with them. It had been a while since I watched TV but fortunately it requires very little in the way of skill or effort.
Wow, is this ever a boring post or what...
Because I'm both extremely curious and a big Unix geek, I ran a little experiment to discover a bit about the readership of my blog. About 5 days ago I planted a web-bug in one of my blog entries so anybody reading it would get logged by my webserver. Tonight I ran a couple of piped shell command lines on my webserver access logs to ferret out a couple of mildly interesting tidbits. ( Here are the results )
If ever there was a good time to accidentally spill fruit juice all over myself, it was while completely decked out in water-proof clothing.
Take a cue from
stangerous, I hereby do request that people point out stuff I may have missed from the following list of stuff to take with me when I leave:
My new 24 inch LCD monitor arrived today :-)
It actually has an SD card reader built into it, making my existing card reader redundant. Oh well. It's too bad so many web pages are badly designed and won't take up more than a third of the page width. But this monitor does have the ability to be twisted sideways and display in portrait mode so maybe I'll end up doing that...
The gloves I purchased a couple of weeks ago (to replace the 7--year-old leather ones that were stolen) were completely useless in the rain because they simply got soaked and thereafter failed to keep my fingers warm. Then one of the zippers on the rain-pants I'd been using for the past few weeks popped open last week.
Consequently I picked up a pair of Neoprene gloves and waterproof cycling tights. While I was there I also got myself a red helmet with lots of ventilation.
Today I meant to attend a free recital thingy for various chamber music groups at Stanford but, since nobody from Hammarskjold wanted to accompany me and I didn't really feel upto wandering around campus alone in the dark, I elected to stick around and play pool instead. I ended up in a game of cutthroat (where 3 people try to sink each others balls) while other Hammies sang and danced to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
It was the longest game of pool I've ever played because we repeatedly scratched, bringing 2 balls back into the game each time. I'm pretty sure that each of us was actually eliminated twice, only to be brought in again on a scratch. Surprisingly, given a bad start, I won.
But pool is a lot like life that way. The level of skill you have is dominated by the random chance that you might accidentally sink the 8-ball and lose the game. I like randomness.
I received an autographed napkin from Batman. It now graces the window in my office. My co-workers are in awe. While I was at it, I also took a few more photographs at work.
I just booked my flight to/from Toronto to bracket my trip to Oz. I'll be arriving at YYZ around 8pm on Dec 17.
I'm flying via United this time. When I was registering with their frequent flier program, I noticed that they had a ridiculously long list of titles from amongst which to select one. Not wanting to pass up this opportunity, I select "swami" as my title :-)
