06:53 am - I bought PALM at $18

The announcement of the Motorola Q knocked Palm shares down to my strike price for buying them: $18. While the Q is cheaper than the Treo, I think the 700p will do even better than the already hot 700w and there's certainly room in the market for multiple players.

07:59 am - I bought AMD stock

AMD's recent announcement of low-power CPUs was the final straw that convinced me they were a good buy at $30 a pop given their string f recent successes against Intel and strong market position going forward.

08:21 am - AMZN

In light of Amazon's release of S3 and substantial rumours of a collaboration between them and Samsung to finally give the iPod a run for its money, I bought AMZN at just under $36. I think it may drop as low as $32 before it rises again though.

10:41 pm - Apple-flavoured kool-aid

I bought some Apple stock today at $65ish. I'm expecting the iSteve to do something crazy to celebrate the company's 30th anniversary in a few weeks.

In the mean time, I want to replace my Powerbook because I'm tired of constant disk swapping due to Spotlight and I don't really want to sink any more money into a gigabyte stick of memory for it. Based on the fact that I've moved my Powerbook out of the house exactly once since I moved down here I think that I could make do with a desktop machine. I don't mind using Ubuntu at work but I don't want the hassle of trying to get Linux to synchronize with my Blackberry or iPod Shuffle. And I find Windows too annoying in a myriad of ways to even consider it. So my new desktop will have to be a Mac. But getting an iMac would waste my lovely 24 inch LCD display. That leaves the Mac Mini.

Aside from having lousy 3D performance the reviews seem to be quite positive about the Mini, especially when outfitted with the Core Duo and 2 gigs of RAM. And since I don't really play 3D games it should be just fine for me. Even though Photoshop hasn't been ported to the x86 yet it will run under Rosetta and I won't notice a performance issue because I only use it for colour correction and JPEG compression, neither of which use Altivec heavily. In fact, since my biggest beef right now is the lack of memory, moving to a system with 4 times as much RAM should be a nice change.

09:54 am - I wanted to buy AAPL on the cheap but the Patriot Act got in the way

I've been interested in the stock market for several years but now that I'm out of school and working I've been looking into investment strategies in more detail. I figured I should start small so I can make my mistakes early on without losing too much money. Since I understand the tech industry better than any of the others, I'll probably stick to that for now. I've been watching a few stocks for the past several weeks and yesterday AAPL dropped below my "buy" price.

Wanting to get in on this opportunity, I started looking into opening a brokerage account. Dogs of the Dow has a great listing of deep discount stock brokers and ScotTrade looked like the cheapest one as long as I stuck to market orders. I filled out the online account application only to be stymied by a requirement of the Patriot Act that I present state ID in person. I was already going to get state ID this Friday because the same act requires me to present it in order to open an account for buying TIPS but by then I'm sure AAPL will have recovered and I'll have lost this opportunity.

BTW, isn't it fascinating how closely the movement of AAPL and GOOG have been tied over the past 6 months?
