iPhone
After waiting a week for a free crackberry that never materialized, I bought an 8-gig iPhone today. It refuses to sync my non-subscription calendar & lacks the wonderful opportunistic playlist synching featured by the Shuffle but otherwise largely meets (high) expectations. Typing on it is definitely much harder than on the crackberry but I'm willing to give it a few days as others have suggested.

Update: I created a new calendar, moved the few upcoming events from my old calendar to it and am able now to sync the new calendar with the iPhone :-)

I think you can create a smart playlist for 8 GB of songs selected by random and have the iPhone sync it. What do you mean by your non-subscription calendar?

That's a good idea for playlists.

I'm talking about a calendar to which I can add events via iCal, as opposed to one that is just a (read-only) subscription to something like my Google Calendar.

Oh really? A regular calendar works fine for me. There's even an option in the sync menu to specify what calendar you want event added on the phone to sync to (since the calendar app on the phone collapses all calendars into one), so it's surprising that it didn't work for you. Did it not sync anything from that calendar?

Oh, I saw the UI for doing this and it's very intuitive. But when I try to sync that particular calendar, iTunes tells me that the device disconnected during the sync process. I think there's just a bug in the syncing mechanism itself :-(

I've emailed the console output to your Apple address.

Cool. I'm trying to resist the urge but I may not be able to hold out :P Do you find the ringer super quiet? That was the big complaint on the ArsTechnica review - they missed pretty much every call because the ringer is apparently so quiet that you can't hear it on the street or in a bar or whatever.

The other thing that turns me off is that you kind of have to use the earbuds for it to be useful, because of the phone integration. And earbuds always fall out of my ears, so I need something else...

Plus, you know, the whole AT&T locked-down thing.

The ringer is fairly quiet but I always feel it vibrating in me pocketses so I haven't missed any calls.

And it works decently sans ear-buds. I've actually only used those once so far, for listening to music.

What can I say about AT&T... you can get a pay-as-you go plan if you really want to avoid the 2-year contract.
