Roomba
The Roomba I ordered arrived yesterday and I set it to work today after an overnight charging session. Although it can't quite get dirt in corners because of its circular shape and it sometimes gets stuck on wires, it did a pretty impressive job of vacuuming the floor.

There are some folding chairs stacked against the living-room wall for use at the house concerts and, at one point, it knocked one of them over onto itself and got trapped inside it. I felt bad watching the poor little thing struggling to escape.

Sounds like more of a chore watching the Roomba do its thing than actually vacuuming. That being said, I like the idea. :)

I've looked into the possibility of getting one of these. They've certainly come down in price. I think once my current vacuum dies (won't be long, it's a Wal-mart $25 special), I'm going to get me a robot.

It's a chore (but compensated for by the novelty value) the first couple of times and then you just leave it alone after making sure there's nothing on which it could choke lying on the floor.

So it makes you change your house layout in order to have it do a job that you can do in less time, with less energy, with a broom or hand vacuum.

Is there a merit _besides_ novelty?

Yes: the house is now clean whereas it hadn't been for the past several weeks.
Empirical evidence would suggest that something is working ;-)
