Making new friends at Stanford
After a week of settling into my new life down here, I finally got around to trying to make new friends with the locals. In the morning I participated in a youth group thingy after church where I met some nice people. And later in the day I went over to a Stanford dorm for dinner where I met more interesting people. It reminded me a lot of Spuc, actually.

I think I'll probably hang out with these people on weeknights from now on. I'm even considering becoming associate member of the dorm so I can have dinner there. The problem is that I'd need to make it there at 6pm every day and I'm not sure if I'll end up leaving work early enough to make that on a daily basis. But it sucks to eat dinner alone every day.

How far away are Stanford and work? If you're working late enough, you could just take a dinner break. Or find some Stanford students who want to eat later. What time does their cafeteria stop serving dinner?

Well, it's not a cafe - it's more like WCRI. They take turns cooking & stuff. I could order late dinners but then I'd miss out on the dinnertime conversation, which is my main reason for joining.

Taking a dinner break is more feasible since it's not terribly far away so I could bike over the from work in ~10 mins. But I can't make "free" long distance calls unless I stop off at home in the middle.

So make free long distance calls after your finish work? Or do they have to be made around 6/dinnertime?

Well, by the time I'd get back home from Stanford, it'd be pretty late on the East coast.

Ah, yes, crazy time zone - I'd forgotten about that. Can't you set up call forwarding on your VoIP phone to allow you to dial a local number and reach a long distance number? That will require you to have access to the login information on the VoIP provider's website. Is it Vonage?

It's actually SpeakEasy. I didn't realize you could forward stuff like that though. It would be sweet if I could! I'll ask my landlord.

It sucks to eat at McDonald's everyday, but I don't mind eating alone. Better alone with reheated gourmet than with a whole bunch of miserable shmucks at a fast food joint.

The latter, though, is my destiny.
